Creating Custom Emojis with Apple’s New Genmoji Feature

Apple’s iOS 18.2 update has finally introduced “Genmoji,” an AI-powered tool that allows users to create custom emojis from text prompts. Previously hinted at during the iOS 18.1 update, Genmoji is now available in the latest iOS, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 public betas, allowing select users to try it out firsthand.

Here’s a guide on how Genmoji works, and what users in Apple’s beta program can look forward to when it officially launches.

    What Is Genmoji?

First unveiled at WWDC 2024, Genmoji is built into the iPhone emoji keyboard and enables users to create unique emojis through written prompts, like “a sloth in a suit and tie.” It can even transform photos of people into emojis. Once created, Genmojis are versatile, usable in Messages, Stickers, Tapbacks, and even in message reactions with Apple’s effects.

How to Create a Customized Emoji with Genmoji

To start using Genmoji, first enable Apple Intelligence. Open the Messages app, start a new message (or select an existing conversation), and tap the emoji keyboard icon in the bottom-left corner. Enter a description in the search bar, then tap “Create New Emoji” underneath. Apple Intelligence will then generate several versions of the emoji based on the prompt provided. To save your favorite, tap “Add” in the top-right corner, adding the emoji to your keyboard for future use.

If you receive a Genmoji from someone else, you can save it by pressing down on the emoji and selecting “Emoji Details” to see the prompt used. There’s an option to download the emoji directly from there.

    When Will Genmoji Officially Launch?

Currently, Genmoji is limited to iOS 18.2 public beta users, who may need to join a waitlist before getting access. The full launch is anticipated in early December.

Which Apple Devices Are Compatible with Genmoji?

    Supported devices include:

    • iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
    • iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Max
    • iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip
    • All iPads with Apple silicon
    • (Support for macOS Sequoia coming soon)

    Where Is Apple Intelligence Available?

Apple Intelligence, including Genmoji, is not yet supported in China or the EU due to regulatory constraints. Initially available only in U.S. English, Apple plans to expand language support by late 2024 to include localized English for regions like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K., with additional languages like French, German, Japanese, and Spanish to follow in 2025.

With the official release just around the corner, Apple’s Genmoji offers an exciting way for users to bring personalized expressions into their chats.
