At its annual Made by Google showcase, the company unveiled major updates across its hardware lineup, including the Pixel 10 series and Pixel Watch 4. But one of the most notable highlights was the debut of new AI-powered features for the Pixel Buds 2a and the refreshed Pixel Buds Pro 2.
Pixel Buds 2a: Affordable but Smarter
Google’s new Pixel Buds 2a are designed as the budget-friendly option in its audio lineup, yet they now include many features once reserved for premium models. For the first time, the A-Series gains active noise cancellation (ANC), enabling users to block outside distractions for clearer calls and uninterrupted listening.
The earbuds also introduce Clear Calling, an AI-enhanced feature that reduces background noise while working with a built-in wind-resistant mesh. On top of that, the Transparency Mode—previously exclusive to the Pro version—makes its way into the 2a, helping users stay aware of their surroundings while enjoying music or podcasts.
Google’s Gemini assistant is also integrated, allowing completely hands-free interaction. Users can ask for directions, check emails, pause music, or even find nearby restaurants—all without pulling out their phone.
Battery performance has also been doubled compared to the previous model, while the design has been made lighter and more compact. With an IP54 rating, the earbuds are splash- and sweat-resistant, making them workout-ready. A new twist stabilizer ensures a customizable fit, giving wearers more comfort options.
The Pixel Buds 2a are priced at $130 and will be available in two fresh colors: Hazel and Iris.
Pixel Buds Pro 2: Premium Features Evolve
The Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google’s high-end earbuds, are also receiving an AI boost. In addition to Gemini support, users will now be able to accept or reject calls with simple gestures—nodding to pick up or shaking their head to decline. This is powered by built-in sensors and accelerometers.
Other new upgrades include Adaptive Audio, which adjusts sound levels based on your surroundings, and Loud Noise Protection, which lowers sudden, sharp sounds like sirens. These features improve listening comfort while keeping users alert and safe.
The Pro 2 will also integrate more seamlessly with Google apps, enabling tasks like adding items to Keep or scheduling events in Calendar directly through voice interaction.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 retail at $230 and now come in a new Moonstone color. Preorders are open, with shipments beginning August 28.
Meanwhile, the Pixel Buds 2a are set to arrive later on October 9.
