Many proponents of web3 feel disillusioned by the traditional web ecosystem’s exploitation of user data. While benefiting businesses, data miners, and AI models, some perceive it as an infringement on privacy.
“We’re witnessing a scenario where a few dominant entities control everything online, from our data to our digital presence. They wield the power to de-platform individuals and monetize our attention,” said Kline, expressing concerns about the current state of the internet.
In response, Kline and others are championing web3, coupled with AI integrations, to decentralize the internet and empower users.
Edge & Node, a company dedicated to developing and supporting decentralized applications (dApps) and protocols, spearheads initiatives like The Graph. Dubbed the “Google of web3,” The Graph aims to index, query, and organize data on a decentralized network, advocating for open blockchain data as a public good.
Utilizing “subgraphs,” akin to open APIs, The Graph enables seamless data organization and retrieval for users engaging with applications built on its platform.
“Web3 represents an ongoing effort to construct a censorship-resistant decentralized internet. This is where internet evolution is headed—an expanding industry, not a contracting one,” Kline emphasized.
The Graph recently unveiled a roadmap for its “New Era,” outlining plans for leveraging its $50 million funding from the previous year. Objectives include broadening data services, supporting developers, enhancing network performance, and facilitating AI advancements, particularly in the realm of large language models (LLMs).
In the AI sphere, Kline underscores the criticality of open data access, advocating against data monopolies. The Graph aims to democratize data access by enabling users to extract data from its network and other blockchains to train AI models.
“Ensuring AI training occurs in a fully open-source environment is paramount,” Kline asserted, highlighting the necessity of transparent data sourcing.
While mainstream AI conferences may not prioritize blockchain integration, Kline anticipates a shifting landscape with evolving business models and incentive structures enabled by tokens and decentralized infrastructure.
“Innovative token economies and decentralized frameworks will revolutionize the AI landscape,” Kline predicted, envisioning a future where AI and blockchain synergize to drive unprecedented advancements.
