Apple has officially launched iOS 18, the latest version of its operating system for iPhones, now available as a free download. This update is compatible with devices from the iPhone XR and XS onwards, as well as the second- and third-generation iPhone SE models. Essentially, if your iPhone was able to run iOS 17, you can upgrade to iOS 18.
When Apple first unveiled iOS 18 during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), it highlighted a new initiative called “Apple Intelligence.” This is the company’s term for a series of generative AI-driven features planned for future releases. However, these AI enhancements are not part of the initial iOS 18 rollout. Instead, the first wave of Apple Intelligence features will debut in a U.S.-based beta with iOS 18.1 later this fall. These capabilities will include tools for rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing long texts, as well as generating notification summaries and cleaning up photos.
Some of the more advanced AI features, such as “Genmoji” (an AI-powered emoji generator), deeper integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and AI-generated images, won’t be included until future updates like iOS 18.2 or beyond.
Despite the delay in AI features, iOS 18 brings a variety of noteworthy improvements and user-focused updates. For instance, the home screen now offers more customization options, including dark and tinted icons, along with a revamped modular Control Center. A number of key apps have also received upgrades.
Among the standout changes, users will find a redesigned Photos app that focuses on helping users rediscover past memories. Additionally, the Voice Memos and Notes apps now support live audio transcription. There’s also the introduction of a new Passwords app for easier management of login credentials.
How to Upgrade to iOS 18
The iOS 18 update is now being rolled out over the air (OTA) through the Settings app. Users can also opt to connect their iPhone to a computer for a wired update, which may be a better choice for those who are running low on storage space.
Before updating, it’s important to back up your device. You can update your iCloud backup by going to the Settings app, tapping your account information, and selecting your device. Alternatively, you can manually back up your iPhone via Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows. Make sure to encrypt your backup for added security, which helps protect sensitive data like saved passwords.
To install iOS 18, head to the Settings app, select General, and then Software Update. The system will display “Update Requested” before automatically downloading the new version once it’s ready.

Keep in mind that certain features may vary depending on your region, especially for users in the European Union due to regulatory differences.
