Meta may soon lose one of its most influential AI leaders. Yann LeCun, the company’s Chief AI Scientist and one of the most respected figures in the field, is reportedly preparing to leave the tech giant to launch his own artificial intelligence startup, according to sources cited by the Financial Times.
LeCun, who also serves as a professor at New York University and is a recipient of the A.M. Turing Award, is said to be in discussions with investors to raise capital for his new venture. His startup will reportedly focus on developing “world models” — advanced AI systems designed to understand and simulate real-world environments in order to predict future outcomes through cause-and-effect reasoning.
These types of AI systems have become a central research focus across the industry, with companies like Google DeepMind and World Labs also exploring similar concepts.
LeCun’s potential departure comes at a crucial moment for Meta, as the company redefines its AI strategy amid fierce competition from rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. In recent months, Meta has undergone a major internal restructuring of its AI teams, creating a new unit called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). This division was built after the company hired more than 50 engineers and researchers from competitors and invested $14.3 billion in data-labeling firm Scale AI. The firm’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, was also brought in to oversee the new initiative.
However, insiders describe the atmosphere within Meta’s AI organization as increasingly disorganized, with some new hires frustrated by corporate bureaucracy. Meanwhile, the company’s earlier generative AI division has seen its influence reduced as leadership shifts focus toward the new lab.
LeCun’s own research within FAIR (Fundamental AI Research Lab) — which emphasizes long-term scientific exploration and innovation — has reportedly been overshadowed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s efforts to accelerate progress following the underwhelming performance of Meta’s Llama 4 model compared to competitors.
Known for his outspoken views, LeCun has often expressed skepticism toward current AI trends, particularly the hype surrounding large language models (LLMs). On social media, he has emphasized that AI systems remain far from achieving true intelligence, famously remarking that humanity should first design a system “smarter than a house cat” before worrying about superhuman AI control.
Meta has yet to issue an official statement regarding LeCun’s reported plans.
