Snapchat Introduces AI-Powered Lens Creation Tool for Users

Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, is enhancing its AI tools for creators with a new feature that allows users to design Snapchat Lenses simply by describing them. This was unveiled at the Snap Partner Summit held in Santa Monica, California.

The new tool, called Easy Lens, enables creators to convert text-based descriptions into Snapchat Lenses, which are augmented reality (AR) filters and effects used in photos and videos. Integrated into Snap’s developer platform, Lens Studio, Easy Lens uses advanced AI models to interpret user input and generate a customized Lens. By utilizing Lens Studio components, creators can build AR objects, 3D transformations, characters, and more.

In addition to Easy Lens, Snap is introducing other tools for creators within Lens Studio. One such tool is Body Morph, which uses generative AI to design 3D characters, costumes, and outfits based on text descriptions or reference images. Snap is also launching an image generator specifically for creating icons for Lenses, along with hundreds of new Bitmoji animations. These animations can now be combined using a blending feature to create more dynamic interactions.

Looking ahead, Snap plans to introduce even more generative AI features to Lens Studio. This includes an animation generator and a tool that can reconstruct real-world objects into 3D models using video uploads. These enhancements aim to give creators more flexibility and tools to build immersive AR experiences.

Snap’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, emphasized the importance of generative AI in shaping the future of the platform. In a recent internal memo, Spiegel highlighted the significant role AI is playing in expanding Snap’s creator base. He noted that AI-powered Lenses are among the most popular on Snapchat, and on-device AI models will allow for faster and more cost-effective content creation.

Spiegel also hinted at future innovations, such as generative video experiences and tools that allow users to reimagine their Snapchat Memories using AI. The number of creators publishing Lenses has grown significantly, reaching 375,000 in recent months, while the number of Lenses across platforms like Snapchat, websites, mobile apps, and Snap’s AR glasses, Spectacles, has risen to 4 million.

Despite these advancements, Snap faces financial challenges, particularly with a weaker advertising market. The company’s third-quarter earnings fell short of expectations, and Snap experienced a significant drop in market value in August. In response, Snap is exploring new ad formats and considering a simplified version of its app to reignite advertiser interest.
