TikTok Expands Messaging with Voice Notes and Media Sharing

TikTok is rolling out new messaging features that allow users to communicate in more personal and engaging ways. The platform confirmed that users can now send voice notes and share up to nine photos or videos within both private and group chats.

This update signals TikTok’s efforts to move beyond being just a video-sharing hub and toward becoming a more versatile communication platform. By enabling richer conversations, TikTok aims to compete with established messaging apps that already offer similar tools.

Voice Notes for More Natural Conversations

One of the key updates is the introduction of voice messages, which lets users record and send audio clips of up to 60 seconds. Voice notes have become a popular way of chatting among younger generations, particularly Gen Z, who often prefer quick audio communication over typing. With this move, TikTok joins the ranks of platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and iMessage that have long supported this format.

Photo and Video Sharing in DMs

Alongside audio, TikTok now supports sending images and videos directly through messages. Users can snap content using their camera or select items from their gallery before sending. They also have the option to edit content prior to sharing. However, TikTok has placed safety restrictions on this feature: new message requests cannot include self-taken photos or videos. Instead, users can only share TikTok-hosted content until the chat is accepted.

To further encourage safe usage, TikTok displays reminders urging users to be mindful of their privacy and the audience they’re sharing with.

    Built-In Safety Measures for Teens

TikTok has emphasized that user protection remains a top priority. Direct messaging is disabled for accounts under 16. For those aged 16–18, the app uses automated systems to detect and block explicit images before they are sent or received. Users over 18 can manage these filters in their privacy settings.

    Building a Stronger Messaging Experience

These updates follow TikTok’s ongoing investment in its messaging ecosystem. In recent years, the platform introduced group chats for up to 32 participants and Creator Chat Rooms, giving fans new ways to connect with their favorite content makers.

By offering voice, photo, and video messaging, TikTok is taking steps to position itself as not just a place to watch short videos, but also as a platform for deeper interaction and self-expression among its users.
