Snapchat Rolls Out “Imagine Lens” for AI-Powered Image Creation

Snapchat is stepping further into the world of artificial intelligence with the launch of its new “Imagine Lens”, a tool that allows users to create and transform images simply by typing in a text prompt. The feature is currently available for Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers.

    How It Works

With Imagine Lens, users can type in almost any idea and watch it turn into a Snap. For example, prompts like “draw me as an alien” or “make a grumpy cat” will instantly generate images. The tool can also re-create or edit existing Snaps, giving users more control over how they want their photos to look. Once created, the images can be shared directly with friends, posted on a Story, or even saved for sharing outside Snapchat.

The feature also comes with a set of pre-loaded prompts to spark creativity. Users might try options such as:

    • “Turn me into a comic strip where something surprising happens.”

    • “Make me a caricature.”

    • “Show this person skydiving.”

Of course, prompts can be customized at any time by tapping the caption bar and entering something new.

    Built on AI Research

Earlier this year, Snap revealed it had been working on its own AI image-generation model for mobile devices. While the company hasn’t confirmed if this exact model powers Imagine Lens, it said the tool was built using a mix of Snap’s in-house models along with other advanced AI technologies.

    Pricing and Availability

Subscribers can find Imagine Lens right at the front of the Lens Carousel or in the Exclusive section of the app. To use it, they simply select the Lens, type in their desired prompt, and watch the AI do its work.

The pricing for access remains tied to Snap’s premium tiers: Snapchat+ Platinum costs $15.99 per month, while Lens+ is offered at $8.99 per month.

Expanding Snap’s AI and AR Ambitions

Snap has long been considered a leader in augmented reality thanks to its wide range of interactive Lenses. But in recent years, the company has been steadily layering in AI capabilities as well.

Earlier in 2024, it introduced a standalone Lens Studio app and web platform that makes building AR experiences more accessible, even for beginners. In March, it also unveiled its first generative AI video Lenses, giving users creative tools beyond static photos.

With Imagine Lens, Snapchat is merging its strengths in AR with the growing demand for AI-powered creativity—making the app more interactive and keeping pace with competitors investing heavily in AI tools.
