DoorDash Enters Restaurant Discovery With New AI-Powered Social App “Zesty”

DoorDash is expanding its ambitions beyond food delivery with the introduction of Zesty, a new AI-driven social app focused on helping people discover great places to eat nearby. The app has launched as a pilot in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, signaling DoorDash’s interest in becoming part of the broader local dining experience.

Rather than scrolling endlessly through reviews, menus, or social media videos, Zesty aims to simplify the decision-making process. The app blends artificial intelligence with social discovery, allowing users to find restaurants that match their mood, preferences, and social setting in just a few taps.

After signing in using an existing DoorDash account, users interact with an AI chatbot that delivers personalized recommendations. Instead of generic search queries, people can type natural prompts such as “quiet dinner spots for introverts” or “romantic places with an old-school vibe.” Zesty also offers suggested prompts like group-friendly brunch locations or intimate date-night options, making it easy to explore even without a clear idea in mind.

Behind the scenes, Zesty pulls together data from multiple sources across the web to generate its recommendations. According to DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang, the app analyzes information from platforms like DoorDash itself, Google Maps, social media, and other public sources to surface what it believes are the most relevant and high-quality options.

Zesty also functions as a social network. Users can post photos, leave comments, follow others, and share restaurant finds with friends. Over time, the app learns individual tastes by tracking saved spots and interactions, helping refine future suggestions. When users discover a place they like, they can bookmark it or send it directly to others.

A DoorDash spokesperson explained that the company sees Zesty as a way to help people connect more deeply with their local food scenes. The goal is to combine personalized search with community-driven content, while learning from early users to shape how the app evolves.

While some consumers may prefer using existing tools like Google or AI assistants for restaurant searches, Zesty could appeal to those who want a dedicated space centered entirely on food discovery and shared experiences.

The launch fits into DoorDash’s broader push beyond delivery. Earlier this year, the company introduced features for booking restaurant reservations and earning rewards for dining in person — moves that show DoorDash is positioning itself as a full-service dining platform, not just a delivery app.
