Google’s Gemini app has crossed a major milestone, reaching 1 billion monthly active users, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The announcement makes Gemini one of the company’s fastest-growing products and marks the 14th Google service to reach the billion-user threshold.
The milestone also puts Gemini on roughly the same scale as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reportedly reached 1 billion monthly active users earlier this year.
Gemini’s Rapid Expansion
Google has been steadily weaving Gemini into its wider ecosystem rather than relying solely on its standalone chatbot. The company has integrated its AI technology into products including Search, Workspace and Android, while also continuing to develop the dedicated Gemini application.
Google’s AI Mode in Search has separately surpassed 1 billion monthly active users worldwide. However, that figure should not be combined with the latest Gemini number. The 1 billion figure announced by Pichai specifically refers to people using the Gemini app, excluding users who interact with Google’s AI through other products.
The company has also continued expanding Gemini’s capabilities with new models and features. Among them is Gemini 3.5 Flash, which is aimed at improving areas such as software development and tasks involving autonomous AI agents.
Voice and Image Generation Drive Usage
Google also provided a glimpse into how people are interacting with Gemini.
According to the company, 63% of Gemini users use the assistant’s voice functionality to communicate with it. Image generation has become another major use case, with Gemini reportedly producing more than 150 million images each day.
The service is also gaining traction outside Google’s Android ecosystem. More than 100 million people are now actively using Gemini on iOS, showing that the chatbot has attracted a substantial audience on Apple devices as well.
A Billion-User Race
Gemini’s latest milestone follows a period of particularly rapid growth. During Google’s second-quarter 2026 earnings update, the company reported more than 950 million monthly users, while daily active usage had tripled over the previous year.
Reaching 1 billion monthly users so soon afterward highlights just how quickly Google’s AI platform is expanding.
The timing is also notable because Google is preparing for its upcoming Made by Google event, where the company is expected to introduce additional Gemini-powered experiences for its Pixel devices.
With Gemini now joining Google’s billion-user club, the company has demonstrated that its AI strategy extends well beyond a standalone chatbot. By embedding Gemini throughout its ecosystem and continuing to add new capabilities, Google is positioning the service as a central part of how users interact with its products.
The growing numbers also underline the increasingly intense competition between Google and OpenAI as both companies race to make their AI assistants indispensable to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
