Google Photos Turns Your Outfits Into an AI-Powered Virtual Closet

Google Photos is rolling out a new AI-powered feature that can turn photos of your outfits into a digital wardrobe, giving users a simple way to organize their clothes and experiment with different looks.

The feature is now available to Google Photos users in the U.S., Brazil, and India on both Android and iOS. It was first announced earlier this year, with Android users beginning to receive access in June.

The concept has an amusing resemblance to the virtual wardrobe featured in the 1995 movie Clueless, where Cher uses a computer system to organize her extensive collection of clothes and decide what to wear.

Google’s version brings a similar idea to modern smartphones, without requiring a Beverly Hills-sized wardrobe.

Build a digital version of your wardrobe

Google Photos uses AI to identify clothing items appearing in users’ photos and create a virtual collection based on them.

Once the wardrobe has been created, users can browse their clothing and filter items into categories such as tops, bottoms, jewelry, and other accessories.

The system also allows users to combine different pieces and experiment with potential outfits, making it easier to remember what they already own or find new combinations.

Google says the feature is intended to act as a personal styling and organization tool. The company also says information about users’ clothing and fashion habits isn’t shared with third parties such as retailers.

More AI features arrive in Google Photos

The virtual closet isn’t the only new addition coming to Google Photos.

Google is also introducing several other tools designed to make editing and managing photos easier. One of them allows users to select, enhance and share images through a single prompt using Gemini Spark.

The feature can combine several actions into one request, potentially reducing the number of steps required to edit and share a photo. Access to Gemini Spark’s feature requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription in the U.S.

Google is also improving its built-in Markup tool.

Users can now use a redaction pen to hide sensitive information such as license plates, adjust the thickness of their drawings more precisely, and choose from different fonts when adding text to images.

    Android gets new photo styles

Android users are also receiving a new collection of photo filters called Moods.

The filters are designed to give photos different visual styles, including looks inspired by 35mm film and early-2000s digital cameras.

Together, the updates show Google continuing to push AI deeper into Google Photos, moving the app beyond basic photo storage and editing toward tools that can help users organize, enhance and interact with their personal photo collections.
