In the aftermath of Apple’s WWDC 2024 keynote, where the company introduced Apple Intelligence and confirmed a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri, Senior Vice President Craig Federighi revealed plans to work with additional third-party AI models. During a post-keynote discussion, Federighi mentioned that Apple is exploring a partnership with Google’s Gemini.

“We’re looking forward to doing integrations with other models, including Google Gemini, for instance, in the future,” Federighi stated. He added that while there is no specific announcement at this time, this direction aligns with Apple’s broader strategy.

Later this year, OpenAI’s ChatGPT will be the first third-party model to be integrated. Apple has indicated that users will be able to access ChatGPT through Siri without the need to sign up for an account or subscribe to premium services. Federighi emphasized that Siri will notify users before transferring them to ChatGPT, maintaining transparency and user control.

“Now you can do it right through Siri, without going through another tool,” Federighi explained. “Siri, it’s really important to understand, will ask you before you go to ChatGPT. Then you can have that conversation with ChatGPT. If there’s any helpful data referenced in your question that you might want to supply to ChatGPT, we’re going to ask, ‘Do you want to send this photo?’ From a privacy point of view, you’re always in control and have total transparency.”

This partnership marks a significant step for Apple as it seeks to enhance its AI capabilities by leveraging powerful third-party models. The collaboration with OpenAI and the potential future integration of Google’s Gemini are part of Apple’s efforts to provide more robust and versatile AI-driven experiences for its users.

The integration of ChatGPT into Siri is expected to enhance the functionality and responsiveness of Apple’s voice assistant, offering users more comprehensive answers and assistance directly through Siri. This move reflects Apple’s commitment to staying at the forefront of AI technology and ensuring that its devices continue to provide cutting-edge features.

As the landscape of AI technology continues to evolve, Apple’s strategy of incorporating third-party models like ChatGPT and potentially Google Gemini highlights the company’s focus on delivering enhanced user experiences while maintaining strong privacy controls. With these advancements, Apple aims to set new standards in AI integration and user interaction.
