Instagram introduces First Draft to speed up Reels editing

Creating an Instagram Reel can be fun, but sorting through multiple video clips and removing unnecessary pauses can quickly become a tedious job. Instagram is now trying to make that process easier with a new feature called First Draft.

The feature automatically analyzes selected clips, trims unnecessary sections, removes pauses, and combines the strongest moments into an initial version of a Reel. Instagram says the process can take less than 10 seconds, giving creators a ready-made starting point instead of requiring them to edit every clip manually.

A faster way to start editing

First Draft is currently rolling out for iPhone users. Creators can access it through Instagram’s camera while recording content or through the Reels gallery after choosing several clips.

Once the automated version has been created, users can continue editing it themselves. This means the feature isn’t intended to replace the creator’s editing process entirely. Instead, it handles some of the repetitive work before the creator takes over.

That could make the feature particularly useful for people who are less experienced with video-editing software. Someone who has recorded several short clips, for example, can let Instagram put together a basic sequence and then make any final adjustments.

The idea itself isn’t completely new. Other popular editing platforms already offer automated tools that can identify useful sections of footage and create quick cuts. Adobe Firefly and CapCut both provide similar capabilities. Instagram’s advantage is that its editing feature is built directly into the platform where creators already record and publish their videos.

    Instagram continues expanding creator tools

First Draft is part of a wider push by Instagram to give creators more tools without requiring them to leave the app.

Earlier this year, the company introduced an option that allows users to replace the music attached to existing feed posts and carousels. This means creators can change a track without deleting the original post and uploading it again.

Instagram’s video-editing app, Edits, is also being developed with additional AI capabilities. The company has been working on an AI assistant that could make editing and content creation easier for users.

Another feature being tested is Series, which allows creators to organize related Reels into a sequence. The idea could help creators turn individual short videos into connected, episodic content that viewers can follow in order.

    Launch comes amid scrutiny

The First Draft announcement also arrived as Instagram chief Adam Mosseri was expected to testify in a major U.S. case involving Meta’s social media platforms.

The lawsuit alleges that Meta designed Instagram and Facebook in ways that encouraged excessive or compulsive use among children while failing to adequately address potential risks. Meta has rejected those allegations.

For creators, however, First Draft represents a much simpler proposition: less time spent cutting clips and more time spent actually creating.
