Meta continues to integrate artificial intelligence into its platforms, and its latest experiment involves AI-generated comments on Instagram. While the company has previously explored AI-driven features—such as AI-powered characters with unique profiles—it eventually discontinued some due to user concerns. Now, Meta is testing a new tool designed to help users write comments with AI assistance.

AI-Generated Comment Suggestions on Instagram

A social media enthusiast, Jonah Manzano, recently spotted a new Instagram feature labeled “Write with Meta AI.” This tool provides AI-generated comment suggestions for posts. According to a video shared by Manzano, users who have access to this test feature will notice a pencil icon next to the comment box. By tapping it, they can prompt Meta AI to analyze the image and generate three suggested comments.

For instance, if a post features a person smiling and giving a thumbs-up in their living room, Meta AI might suggest comments like “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.” If users aren’t satisfied with the initial suggestions, they can refresh to generate more options.

A spokesperson from Meta confirmed that the company is actively testing AI-powered features across its apps, stating, “Beyond DMs, you’ll find Meta AI in areas such as comments, feed, groups, and search to enhance your experience.”

User Reactions and Concerns

While Meta has yet to announce when or if this feature will be widely released, it has already experimented with AI-generated comments on Facebook in the past. However, many Instagram users may not welcome this addition. Critics argue that AI-generated comments could reduce the authenticity of interactions, making social media feel less personal.

Instagram has long been a platform where users value genuine engagement, and some believe AI-powered comments could further contribute to a sense of artificiality. Many users yearn for a time when social media was more spontaneous and personal, without the pressure to engage with AI-suggested responses.

Meta’s AI Integration Strategy

This isn’t the first time Meta has explored AI-driven interactions. Last year, the company tested AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, hinting at a broader effort to automate engagement on its platforms. Whether this feature becomes a permanent addition or fades away like past experiments remains to be seen.
