Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has taken another step forward in enhancing the capabilities of its chatbot, Grok, by introducing a new “memory” function. This update allows Grok to retain information from previous conversations, helping it deliver more personalized responses over time.

Announced on Wednesday evening, the memory feature enables Grok to recall past interactions with users, including preferences, interests, and commonly asked questions. With this new addition, the chatbot can tailor its suggestions and replies based on your prior chats, creating a more user-centric experience.

Similar features have already been implemented by competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Both platforms use memory to fine-tune responses and remember user-specific context, with ChatGPT even referencing the entire chat history for deeper personalization.

According to an official post from Grok’s account on X (formerly Twitter), the memory system is designed with user transparency in mind. Users can view exactly what Grok remembers and have the option to erase specific items or turn off memory altogether. “Memories are transparent,” the post reads, emphasizing user control over stored data.

The memory feature is currently available in beta for users accessing Grok through its website and mobile apps on iOS and Android. However, this rollout does not yet extend to users in the European Union or the United Kingdom due to regulatory considerations.

To manage or disable the memory feature, users can visit the Data Controls section in the app’s settings. Specific memories can also be deleted directly from the chat interface by tapping the memory icon beneath saved details. This option is already live for the web version and is expected to arrive on Android soon.

xAI also mentioned that it is working to integrate this memory feature into the Grok interface on X, the social platform also owned by Elon Musk. Although no timeline has been provided, this future integration is expected to bring the same personalized functionality to users chatting with Grok on that platform.

As xAI continues to evolve Grok’s capabilities, these improvements are aimed at bringing it in line with — and possibly surpassing — the current leaders in the AI chatbot space.
