Chrome Moves to a Two-Week Update Cycle as Browser Security Enters the AI Era

Google is speeding up the release schedule for Chrome, moving from a four-week cycle to new updates every two weeks. The change officially begins with Chrome 153, which is rolling out across desktop, iOS, and Android.

The faster schedule is more than a change to Google’s software calendar. The company says it is part of a broader effort to respond more quickly to security threats as artificial intelligence changes the way vulnerabilities are discovered, exploited, and fixed.

Why Chrome is updating more often

Security researchers, developers, and automated tools are identifying bugs at an increasingly rapid pace. Google believes a shorter release window will allow important fixes to reach users sooner instead of sitting in the pipeline for weeks.

One key concern is the so-called “N-day” window — the period between a vulnerability becoming publicly known and users receiving a patch. The longer that gap remains open, the more opportunity attackers have to exploit systems that have not yet been updated.

By moving to a two-week cycle, Chrome can potentially reduce that exposure.

The shift could also help Google introduce new browser capabilities at a faster pace. That is particularly important as AI is becoming a major part of the browser market and new competitors are appearing with features built around AI assistants and agents.

AI is changing the browser race

Although OpenAI’s Atlas browser is no longer operating, competition around Chrome remains intense. A growing group of browsers, including Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity’s Comet, and DuckDuckGo, are experimenting with different approaches to AI-powered browsing.

Google is also developing additional AI functionality for Chrome. A quicker release cycle gives the company more opportunities to test, improve, and expand those features without waiting as long between major updates.

There is another potential benefit: Chrome’s enormous global user base means its development decisions can influence the wider browser industry.

Other major browser developers have already moved toward faster release schedules. Mozilla, Microsoft Edge, and Brave have adopted two-week cycles as well, making rapid updates increasingly common across the browser ecosystem.

Chrome has been speeding up for years

This isn’t Google’s first attempt to shorten Chrome’s release process.

In 2021, Google reduced the browser’s schedule from six weeks to four weeks. That decision was itself part of a longer push toward releasing software more frequently so security improvements could reach users faster.

The latest move takes that philosophy another step further.

With AI accelerating both software development and cyber threats, Google is betting that browsers need to evolve just as quickly. For Chrome users, that means more frequent updates, faster security patches, and potentially quicker access to new features — although it also means updates will become a more regular part of using the browser.
