Apple Maps Adopts ‘Lake America’ Name in U.S. Following Google

Apple has updated Apple Maps in the United States to display “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario, following a federal order directing U.S. agencies to adopt the new geographic name.

The change comes shortly after Google made a similar adjustment to its mapping service. However, Apple is limiting the renamed version to American users. People accessing Apple Maps in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario, while users elsewhere are expected to see both names.

The mapping update follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on August 27. The directive instructed the U.S. Department of the Interior to update federal geographic databases within 30 days, formally replacing Lake Ontario with Lake America in U.S. government records.

The administration described the Great Lake as an important economic resource and said the new name was intended to recognize its significance to the United States.

    Mapping Services Take Different Approaches

Google has explained that its mapping platform generally follows official government geographic databases when place names are changed. Apple has now taken a comparable approach by reflecting the federal designation for American users.

Not every mapping provider is following the same policy.

MapQuest has chosen to retain Lake Ontario, arguing in favor of keeping the established name familiar to users. The company also declined to adopt “Gulf of America” when the Gulf of Mexico was renamed in U.S. federal records in 2025.

That position appears to have generated considerable attention for the longtime mapping service. Following the controversy, MapQuest experienced a sharp increase in downloads and climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store’s navigation rankings. Its increased popularity also pushed it high in Google Play rankings.

The company has publicly signaled that it has no immediate plans to reverse its decision.

    Another Geographic Naming Dispute

The Lake America change arrives during continued political and trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Because Lake Ontario is shared by both countries, the decision has attracted additional attention beyond a typical mapping update.

It also illustrates how digital mapping companies handle disputed or government-mandated geographic names. Rather than necessarily displaying one universal label worldwide, services can show different names depending on a user’s location.

Apple and Google have previously demonstrated this approach. Both companies updated their U.S. maps following the federal government’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

With Apple now joining Google in implementing the Lake America designation, the largest mapping platforms in the U.S. are once again following federal naming conventions. MapQuest, meanwhile, is positioning itself as an alternative for users who prefer the traditional geographic name.

The disagreement shows that seemingly simple map labels can quickly become part of broader debates involving politics, national identity and technology companies’ relationships with governments.
