Google Wallet Adds Parent-Controlled Spending Accounts for Kids

Google is expanding the role of its digital wallet for families. The company has introduced a new feature in the U.S. that allows parents to create a controlled spending balance for children under 18, giving younger users a way to make digital payments while parents remain in charge of the account.

The idea is to give children practical experience managing money without requiring them to have their own traditional bank account. Parents can add funds, establish spending rules, and keep track of how the money is being used.

    More control for parents

The new Google Wallet feature includes several tools designed to give parents oversight without completely taking away a child’s independence.

    Parents can:

    • Set daily spending limits
    • Review transaction history
    • Receive alerts when purchases are made
    • Temporarily pause spending
    • Lock or unlock the account if a device is lost

The temporary spending pause could be particularly useful when parents want to stop payments without permanently disabling the account.

Children, meanwhile, can use compatible Android smartphones and Wear OS devices to make contactless payments at locations that accept Google Pay.

Google is presenting the feature as more than simply a payment option. The company sees it as a way for families to introduce children to everyday money management and gradually build better financial habits.

    Competition is already strong

Google is entering a market that already includes several services aimed at helping parents manage children’s spending.

Apple offers Apple Cash Family, which allows parents to send money to children and monitor their transactions. There are also dedicated financial education platforms such as FamZoo and Greenlight, which combine prepaid cards with parental controls and tools designed to teach children about money.

Google Wallet’s advantage is that families who already use Android devices can access these capabilities without necessarily needing another dedicated financial service.

    Building on earlier family features

The latest update follows Google’s previous expansion of Wallet for younger users. In 2025, the company began allowing children in selected countries to use Google Wallet for in-store payments under parental supervision.

At that time, parents or guardians had to approve the addition of a payment card. They could also receive email notifications when their child completed a transaction.

Children were also given access to supported digital items through Wallet, including event tickets, library cards and gift cards.

The new spending balance takes that system a step further by giving parents more direct control over the money their children can use.

For now, the feature is being introduced in the United States. Google has not announced a timeline for expanding the service to other countries.

With digital payments becoming increasingly common, Google’s approach could give families another way to introduce children to spending, budgeting and financial responsibility while keeping parents involved.
