Amazon has introduced new AI-powered technology for its fleet of electric delivery vehicles, aiming to streamline the package retrieval process and help drivers efficiently prioritize packages. Known as Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR), this vision-based system uses visual cues to indicate which packages are intended for delivery at each stop.
Through the VAPR system, packages for the current stop are highlighted with green circles or red lights, providing drivers a clear visual signal to identify the correct items without needing to shuffle through their cargo. Amazon believes this will eliminate the hassle of stopping and searching for relevant packages, improving efficiency at each delivery.
The VAPR technology also includes an audio alert to notify drivers if they’ve selected the correct packages, replacing the need for handheld devices typically used to verify items during delivery. This innovation marks a step towards a more seamless and hands-free process for drivers, potentially saving valuable time during busy delivery routes.
Amazon has been developing VAPR since early 2020, adapting the system to suit the unique conditions inside delivery vans, such as limited lighting and space. “We had to consider delivery-specific factors, like lighting and space constraints in the vans,” said John Colucci, Amazon’s product manager, in a recent announcement.
Currently, the system is set to be deployed in 1,000 of Amazon’s electric Rivian delivery vans by early 2025. Initial testing has already been underway in selected areas, including Boston, where drivers reportedly reduced the time spent per stop from an average of two to five minutes down to under a minute.
Amazon’s focus on efficiency aligns with its broader efforts to streamline logistics and delivery operations. By minimizing the time drivers spend searching for packages at each stop, the VAPR technology could ultimately help the company optimize delivery routes, improve driver productivity, and enhance customer satisfaction with faster, more accurate deliveries.
With plans to expand VAPR across a broader range of delivery vehicles in the coming years, Amazon aims to further integrate advanced technology into its logistics operations, signaling a shift towards smarter, AI-powered tools in package delivery.
