OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Study Mode in its ChatGPT platform, aiming to shift student usage from passive answer-seeking to active learning and comprehension. This feature is designed to support the development of critical thinking by guiding students through their learning journey instead of simply giving away solutions.
With Study Mode activated, ChatGPT takes on a more interactive teaching role. Rather than directly providing answers, it asks users follow-up questions and prompts them to explain their reasoning. This not only helps gauge a student’s understanding but also encourages deeper cognitive engagement.
The feature began rolling out this week to users on ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. OpenAI also plans to expand Study Mode access to educational accounts—typically used in schools with institution-wide subscriptions—in the near future.
A Tool Built for Thoughtful Learning
This update comes in response to the widespread use of ChatGPT by students, many of whom have been using it for homework and essay writing. While the tool has proven helpful in many educational contexts, researchers have expressed concern that overreliance on generative AI might hinder students’ ability to think critically. One study published in June revealed that individuals using ChatGPT for writing tasks showed less brain activity than those using traditional search methods or working unaided.
Since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, its presence in classrooms has sparked mixed reactions. Initially, many school districts imposed strict bans, fearing misuse. However, by 2023, several of those bans were lifted as educators began to accept the inevitability of AI in learning environments and looked for ways to integrate it responsibly.
With the introduction of Study Mode, OpenAI aims to offer a more educationally sound alternative—an environment where students are encouraged to learn and reflect rather than copy and paste.
However, the feature isn’t foolproof. Students can still switch back to the standard mode if they’re only looking for quick answers. Currently, there are no built-in controls that allow parents or teachers to enforce Study Mode usage. However, OpenAI has hinted at exploring such options in future updates.
Ultimately, Study Mode represents an important step toward reshaping how AI is used in education—placing emphasis on understanding and effort, rather than shortcuts and speed.
