Ransomware Group Leaks Alleged Tata Technologies Data

A ransomware gang known as Hunters International has reportedly leaked data it claims was stolen from Tata Technologies. This comes just over a month after the Indian company acknowledged a cyberattack that led to the temporary suspension of certain services.

The leaked information, posted on the group’s dark web leak site, appears to include personal details of both current and former Tata Technologies employees. Additionally, the data set contains confidential company records such as purchase orders and business contracts with clients in India and the United States.

According to the ransomware group, the breach involves over 730,000 documents, spanning various file formats like Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDFs. In total, the compromised data is said to be around 1.4 terabytes in size.

Tata Technologies’ Response and Uncertainty Around the Leak

Back in late January, Tata Technologies informed Indian stock exchanges about a ransomware attack that impacted some of its IT assets. However, the company reassured stakeholders that its client services remained unaffected throughout the incident.

It remains unclear whether the data now leaked by Hunters International is directly linked to the cyberattack Tata Technologies disclosed earlier this year. Despite multiple requests for comment, the company has yet to respond.

    About Tata Technologies

Originally founded in 1989 as the automotive engineering division of Tata Motors, Tata Technologies became an independent entity in 1994. It operates as a subsidiary of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates. The company specializes in product engineering and research and development services, primarily serving clients in the automotive and aerospace industries. With a presence in 27 countries, Tata Technologies has 20 delivery centers and employs over 12,500 people worldwide.

    Who Is Hunters International?

Emerging in late 2023, Hunters International is a relatively new player in the ransomware-as-a-service landscape. This type of operation allows affiliates to conduct attacks using the group’s infrastructure, with the gang taking a share of any ransom payments.

There are indications that Hunters International may have ties to the Hive ransomware group, which was heavily disrupted by law enforcement in 2023. Notably, Hive was responsible for leaking data stolen from Tata Power, another Tata Group company, in 2022.

As ransomware threats continue to evolve, organizations like Tata Technologies face ongoing challenges in securing their data and mitigating the risks associated with cyberattacks.
