Truecaller Expands Scam Protection Beyond Caller ID With New Web-Based Scam Checker

Truecaller is taking its fraud-detection technology beyond phone calls. After building a caller ID platform used by more than 500 million people, the Swedish company has launched Scam Checker, a new tool designed to help users investigate suspicious phone numbers, links, and messages without needing the Truecaller app or an account.

Check Suspicious Numbers, Links and Messages

Scam Checker is available on the web and Android, initially launching in India before expanding to Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Users can paste a suspicious phone number, website link, or message into the service. Truecaller then checks the submitted information against its fraud intelligence and its community-powered ScamFeed database.

For links, the system can expand shortened URLs, follow redirects, and inspect the final destination before comparing it with Truecaller’s risk database and other fraud signals. If a user submits an entire message, Scam Checker can identify phone numbers or links inside it and look for related scam reports.

The basic service is free, although detailed information about a phone number, including the name connected to it, remains part of Truecaller’s existing sign-in-based service.

Scams Are Moving Beyond Phone Calls

The move reflects how online scams have changed. Fraudsters increasingly use messaging apps, SMS, websites, and social platforms rather than relying solely on traditional phone calls.

A 2025 GSMA survey of adults in India found that among people who reported being scammed, 46% were contacted through messaging apps, 37% through SMS, and 32% through voice calls.

Truecaller estimates that people conduct roughly 14 million searches every month looking for information about suspicious phone numbers and links. The company believes Scam Checker can provide an easier way for people to verify something suspicious at the exact moment they encounter it.

Community Reports Are a Major Part of the System

Truecaller is also relying heavily on reports submitted by its users.

The company says its ScamFeed currently contains around 20,000 scam reports in India, with approximately 1,300 new reports being added every week. Between September 14 and 20, Truecaller says it analyzed 12.9 billion messages worldwide and identified 20.3 million as fraudulent.

While Scam Checker is primarily designed as a consumer product, the information gathered through the service could also strengthen Truecaller’s broader fraud and risk products for businesses.

The company plans to expand the types of scams its system can identify and eventually introduce screenshot uploads, allowing users to submit images of suspicious conversations or messages for analysis.

Truecaller Is Looking Beyond Caller ID

The expansion comes as Truecaller faces a changing market in India, where it has more than 350 million users. Telecom companies are introducing government-backed caller-name identification services, while Apple and Google continue to improve their own caller ID and spam-protection features.

India’s telecom regulator has also ordered caller-ID applications to share user-submitted spam reports with telecom operators, a move Truecaller has publicly criticized.

That makes the shift toward broader scam protection increasingly important to the company’s strategy.

Truecaller says caller ID remains an important part of its platform, but modern scams are becoming increasingly multi-channel. Links, messages, voice calls, and video can all be used as part of the same fraud attempt.

With Scam Checker, Truecaller is essentially extending the protection it built around phone numbers into the wider internet—where many scams now begin.
