Why You Shouldn’t Share Medical Images with AI Chatbots

Before you go about your day, here’s an important reminder: think carefully before sharing your private medical information with AI chatbots.

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini are increasingly used by individuals seeking health advice or answers to medical concerns. Some people even turn to dubious apps that use AI to assess potential medical conditions. Recently, a feature on the platform X has encouraged users to upload X-rays, MRIs, and PET scans to its AI chatbot, Grok, for analysis.

While it might seem convenient, sharing medical images or data with such tools comes with significant risks. Medical data is considered highly sensitive and enjoys legal protections under various laws. However, when you voluntarily share this data with an AI tool, these protections may no longer apply.

Generative AI models are typically trained on user-provided data to enhance their accuracy and performance. However, how this data is stored, used, or shared is often unclear. Companies may change their policies, and users are left trusting their assurances. Alarmingly, private medical information has appeared in datasets used for training AI, making it accessible to third parties such as healthcare providers, future employers, or even government agencies.

Most consumer-focused apps and services are not governed by healthcare privacy laws like HIPAA, meaning your medical data isn’t legally protected. For example, X’s Grok, promoted by its owner Elon Musk as a tool for interpreting medical scans, is still in its developmental stage. Musk himself described the results as “early stage” while expressing confidence in the tool’s potential. However, Grok’s privacy policy reveals that user data may be shared with other unspecified “related” companies, raising further concerns about data security and privacy.

Once sensitive information is uploaded online, it is nearly impossible to erase. Data that enters the digital realm can resurface in unintended ways, putting your privacy at risk. Whether it’s a personal X-ray or an MRI, uploading such files to AI systems can compromise your privacy in ways you might not anticipate.

The bottom line? Be cautious about sharing your medical images or records with AI chatbots. What might seem like a harmless query today could lead to significant privacy breaches in the future.
